Req Description ABB Inc. seeks a professional lead substation automation commissioning engineer to support commissioning activities in the Substations Engineering Department which consists of automation, protection, control, communication, and SCADA engineers and designers. The work will be mostly at substation site locations with extensive travel required. Typical duties/responsibilities:
• Commissioning and testing of substation automation systems, including relays, annunciators, RTU’s, substation computers, communication gateways, and substation LAN’s, for AIS and GIS substations with voltages from 4.16 kV to 765 kV
• Provide support and input to protection and control engineers related to the enhancements of the protection and control applications, philosophies and designs.
• Recommends alterations to development and design to improve quality of processes and/or procedures.
• Participate as a member of project teams to assist in the development of the project schedule for construction and outages, and provide technical guidance for testing and commissioning activities.
• Coordinate test equipment shipping to and from site.
• Assist the Substation Automation Engineering Manager in meeting department goals.
 

Education Electrical Engineering Technology Degree; Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering preferred
 

Interpersonal Skills Excellent written and oral communication skills, good customer service orientation.  

Work Experience Position Qualifications:
• Minimum of five years relevant substation automation engineering commissioning experience in electrical power systems or industrial automation systems domain
• Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings and technical documents.
• Ability to communicate effectively and act decisively
• Ability to install engineering wiring changes.
• Ability to document work performed and track progress of project, including administration of warranty items.
• Broad knowledge of diverse field service operations and ability to independently resolve complex problems.
• Foresight to anticipate problems and recognize opportunities for cost-effectively improving operations.
• Independently plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, and adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria.
• Familiar with protective relaying concepts, practices, and procedures

Desired competencies:
• Knowledgeable of major electrical power and industrial system applications
• Understanding on the functionalities of Electrical Protection, Control systems, Substation Automation systems and SCADA/RTU systems
• Familiar with the design, integration, installation and testing of electrical control and protection systems for generation, transmission and distribution systems
• Comprehends the benefits of modern Substation Automation communication standards and protocols (e.g. IEC 61850, DNP 3.0)
• Understands ABB and non-ABB protective relay devices and remote terminal units
